The wines of D.O. Monterrei arrive in Barcelona
26/09/2025The D.O. Monterrei presented their wines yesterday in Gijón, in a showroom type event where they enjoyed great success. More than 200 people linked to the world of gastronomy passed through the hall during the afternoon: hostelers, distributors, sommeliers, specialized press and communicators. All of them valued very positively the elaborations that had the opportunity to taste, about 50 wines belonging to 22 wineries attached to the Galician DO, “a jewel yet to be discovered”, as they appreciated.
Monterrei seeks with these actions to make known the denomination, one of the youngest in Galicia, with only 30 years of life and which is made up of 29 wineries and more than 798 hectares. This D.O., located in the south-east of the province of Orense, is known essentially for its wines based on grapes Godello and Treixadura in white and Mencía in red. But it hides much more, as wines made with native varieties with a much smaller presence, but great complexity, such as Doña Blanca, Albariño, Blanca de Monterrei, Loureira and Caíño Blanco in terms of white grapes and Merenzao, Tempranillo, Sousón and Caíño Tinto in inks. A pleasant surprise for the public attending the event.
In addition, the D.O. Monterrei is one of the most diverse in Galicia, with up to three different types of soil (slate, sandy and clay) that are expressed differently in their wines. To this is added a great difference of altitude between the two subzones (valley and hillside), which makes their wines very different from each other. The microclimate of the area does the rest, being much warmer than in other Galician D.O. becoming temperate Mediterranean, but maintaining the continental influence.
All this makes the D.O. Monterrei, still one of the great unknown in the Spanish wine scene, a jewel to be discovered. Hence the commitment of the Regulatory Board for this type of events, to strengthen the brand image and, above all, open new marketing channels for wineries, in addition to strengthening existing ones. For this purpose they have already visited, in addition to Gijón, Madrid, Mallorca, Valencia, and will do the same with Bilbao, Seville and Barcelona.
As an addition, a modification of the specification has just been approved that includes, for the first time, the elaboration of rosé wines. Another example that Monterrei still has much to offer.
