24/07/2025In today’s day has been published in the DOG, the modification of the Specification of the Protected Designation of Origin Monterrei.
The main developments are as follows:
- Possibility to make rosé wines.
- Extension of the delimited territory. The territory is extended to several parishes of the municipalities of Monterrei, Cualedro and Laza. In addition, some parishes of the Municipality of Riós, which until now were only partially included, are now fully included.
- The distinction between preferred and authorised varieties is deleted. The only requirement is that protected wines must be produced with one of the varieties allowed for the designation of origin.
- Modification of maximum production yields. The maximum production of grapes per hectare becomes 13,200 kilos for white varieties and 10,000 kilos for inks.
- Changes in analytical parameters. For red wines the minimum total acidity is reduced to 4.0 grams per litre of tartaric acid, and for whites the maximum limit for sulphur dioxide content is raised to 200 milligrams per litre.
- Modification of some oenological practices, with the deletion of three requirements that were taken up until now, namely:
- The prohibition of the use of pieces of wood in wine-making and subsequent processes.
- The limitation to the two previous harvests, with regard to the possibility of mixing one-year wines with up to 15% of the volume with wines from other harvests.
- The obligation to make wines of the PDO Monterrei using at least 60% of certain varieties, which were considered preferential in the specification.
