Verín, 2 October 2026. The Monterrei Designation of Origin officially declared the 2026 harvest concluded on 29 September, with a total of 8,769,674.44 kilos of grapes harvested. Of the total volume collected, 81% corresponds to white grape varieties, while the remaining 19% belongs to red grape varieties. This result confirms the positive evolution experienced by the wine sector in the region in recent years and further highlights the importance of its native grape varieties.
The weather conditions recorded throughout the growing cycle were decisive both in bringing forward the start of the harvest, which began on 17 August, and in the development of an exceptionally long campaign, one of the longest remembered in the history of D.O. Monterrei. The period leading up to the harvest was characterised by high temperatures, scarce rainfall and a marked temperature variation between day and night. These conditions favoured a gradual ripening process and helped maintain an appropriate balance between the grapes’ alcohol potential and acidity.
The President of the Regulatory Council of D.O. Monterrei, Manuel Vázquez Losada, points out that “the figures from this harvest once again demonstrate the potential of the territory and the work carried out throughout the year by grape growers and wineries. Reaching a new all-time production record while maintaining good grape quality is a source of satisfaction for the entire sector.”
With the conclusion of the harvest, the wineries of D.O. Monterrei now enter a new stage focused on the production of this year’s wines. The condition of the grapes upon arrival at the wineries allows this process to be approached with very positive expectations, although the evolution of the musts and the winemaking process itself will ultimately determine the characteristics of the wines and enable the distinctive qualities of the region to be expressed in the glass.
In this way, D.O. Monterrei brings a particularly significant campaign for the region’s wine sector to a close, marked by a new all-time production record and by harvest conditions that allow the sector to look ahead to the coming months with optimism.
